How to evaluate drilling software, including where we lose

Seven questions to put to any vendor, us included. Ask for the answer on your own shifts, not a slide.

Ask them
What happens with no signal, and how does it upload?
Why it matters
A manual offline switch or a required re-login loses shifts in camp.
DrillLogs today
Saved on the tablet; uploads by itself when coverage returns. Android only.
Ask them
Who approves a shift, and can they approve their own?
Why it matters
Self-approval is the first thing an auditor asks about.
DrillLogs today
Someone other than the submitter, by default. Then locked.
Ask them
What happens to a shift with a problem in it?
Why it matters
A warning nobody reads is not a control.
DrillLogs today
Accepted with an alert. Overlapping depths, wedge errors and core loss block approval until settled; other checks warn.
Ask them
Can your client sign off inside the product?
Why it matters
Saves a round of emailed PDFs.
DrillLogs today
Clients get a read-only view of every shift.
Ask them
Can it check an invoice made outside the system?
Why it matters
Your contractor may never adopt your software.
DrillLogs today
The contractor's own PDF, checked line by line against your shifts.
Ask them
What can you export, and is anything gated?
Why it matters
Your record should leave with you.
DrillLogs today
PLOD PDFs, a PDF or Excel management report, CSVs, invoice files (QuickBooks, Xero, CSV, JSON) and a read-only API. Invoicing needs the billing plan.
Ask them
Which languages, on which screens?
Why it matters
“Multiple languages” often means the website only.
DrillLogs today
Tablet: English, French. Web app: English, French, Spanish, Russian. Management report: English. Website: English, French.
